Conocí a Daniel el año pasado en una inauguración en Casa Anja, en una noche bogotana. Le pedí un cigarrillo y, desde ese día, me causó curiosidad porque llevaba un sombrero muy particular y lleno de magia. Y sí, magia, porque la magia existe, como existe el sol, el cielo y las estrellas.
Después de ese día lo volví a ver un par de veces hasta que le pregunté si podía escribir un artículo sobre él, y hace unos días fui a su estudio y realmente Rosi y S ahora tienen otro motivo para venir a Colombia, porque el estudio de Daniel no solo es un espacio creativo y dinámico en mitad del centro de Bogotá, arriba en la montaña, sino que es un lugar con una energía muy especial y la mejor música.
Daniel es sueco y eso también me pareció increíble, porque no es muy común encontrarse con alguien del norte aquí en el sur, y como yo viví en Finlandia, amo el misticismo de los países nórdicos. Creo que son lugares llenos de fábulas, mitos, leyendas, vikingos, naturaleza y una historia muy interesante.
I met Daniel last year at an opening at Casa Anja, on a Bogotá night. I asked him for a cigarette, and from that day, he sparked my curiosity because he was wearing a very unique and magical hat. And yes, magic—because magic exists, just like the sun, the sky, and the stars.
After that day, I saw him a couple more times until I asked if I could write an article about him. A few days ago, I visited his studio, and now Rosi and S have another reason to come to Colombia, because Daniel’s studio is not only a creative and dynamic space in the heart of Bogotá, up in the mountains, but also a place with very special energy and the best music.
Daniel is Swedish, and that also seemed incredible to me, because it is not very common to meet someone from the north here in the south. Since I lived in Finland, I love the mysticism of the Nordic countries. I believe they are places full of fables, myths, legends, Vikings, nature, and a very interesting history.

A principios del siglo XIX, el mundo no era tal como lo conocemos ahora. Había países que no existían y otros que no tenían los límites que ahora conocemos. El reparto de las tierras tras las guerras y las alianzas y tratados cambiaría las fronteras de los países de todo el mundo hasta bien entrado el siglo XX. Noruega, en el año 1800, pertenecía a la corona de Dinamarca y en 1813 formaba parte de la corona de Suecia. Finlandia perteneció a Suecia hasta 1809 y luego pasaría a ser dominada por Rusia. Se constituiría como nación en 1918. Islandia perteneció primero a Noruega y luego a Dinamarca, y solo sería un país independiente en 1944. Suecia y Dinamarca crecen o decrecen según los territorios que formaban parte de su corona pasen de un país al otro, o a Rusia.
En este mapa cambiante, que adquirió la forma que hoy conocemos, tuvo mucho que ver el romanticismo, que promovía la exaltación de la libertad del individuo y de las naciones, y este romanticismo nos llevó a los cuentos que cada país tiene. Pero la verdadera importancia de estos cuentos no es solo en qué contexto histórico se recogieron, sino qué cuentan.
Daniel me contó que creció en una ciudad pequeña en el campo llamada Skårby, con 20 casas alrededor, en mitad de un bosque. Daniel creció rodeado de naturaleza donde, mientras jugaba, siempre estaba construyendo y escuchando historias místicas llenas de fantasía. En ese lugar nacen algunos de sus procesos creativos. Daniel siempre ha tenido una conexión con la naturaleza porque creció en un bosque mágico.
Cuando creces en un lugar así, con este tipo de historias que hablan de que los hombres y las mujeres somos los mismos, tanto en el norte helado como en el sur soleado; que nos animan y nos entristecen las mismas cosas; que luchamos por lo mismo: vivir; hablan de la humana necesidad de contar, de transitar por el mundo simbólico de los cuentos para que, cuando la pérdida, la encrucijada, el engaño, la traición o el amor lleguen a nuestra vida, sepamos cómo enfrentarlos o vivirlos y salir airosos. Gracias a estos cuentos, los seres humanos aprendimos que lo más importante es cuidar a los que te rodean, y también aprendimos a confiar en nuestros semejantes, a ser amables, a colaborar.
Daniel es eso: un artista con una conciencia social muy grande y con un sentido de justicia que se siente en sus obras, y que nos hace recordar que ese tiempo lleno de historias místicas donde lo que fue todavía es, y que los seres humanos solo deseamos eso: vivir en un mundo más justo.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the world was not as we know it today. There were countries that did not exist, and others that did not have the borders we now recognize. The redistribution of lands after wars, alliances, and treaties would change the borders of countries around the world well into the 20th century. In 1800, Norway belonged to the Danish crown, and in 1813 it became part of the Swedish crown. Finland belonged to Sweden until 1809 and was then dominated by Russia, eventually becoming a nation in 1918. Iceland first belonged to Norway and then to Denmark, only becoming an independent country in 1944. Sweden and Denmark grew or shrank depending on whether territories under their crown passed to another country or to Russia.
In this changing map, which eventually took the form we know today, Romanticism played an important role, promoting the exaltation of the freedom of individuals and nations. This Romanticism also gave rise to the stories that each country has. But the true importance of these tales is not only the historical context in which they were collected, but also what they convey.
Daniel told me that he grew up in a small rural town called Skårby, with 20 houses around, in the middle of a forest. He grew up surrounded by nature, where, while playing, he was always building and listening to mystical stories full of fantasy. It is in that place that some of his creative processes are born. Daniel has always had a connection to nature because he grew up in a magical forest.
When you grow up in a place like that, with stories that speak of how men and women are the same, whether in the icy north or the sunny south; stories that cheer us up and make us sad; stories that show that we all struggle for the same thing: to live; they speak to the human need to tell stories, to move through the symbolic world of tales so that, when loss, crossroads, deceit, betrayal, or love arrive in our lives, we know how to face them, experience them, and overcome them. Thanks to these stories, humans have learned that the most important thing is to care for those around you, and we also learn to trust others, to be kind, and to collaborate.
Daniel is that: an artist with a deep social conscience and a sense of justice that is felt in his work, reminding us that the time full of mystical stories, where what once was still exists, teaches us that humans desire only one thing: to live in a fairer world.

Aunque Daniel creció en una familia de artistas, al principio él odiaba todo ese mundo, pero, como todo en la vida, da vueltas. Su profesor de arte del colegio, un hombre alto y gruñón, le dijo, después de que Daniel supiera todos los nombres de muchos artistas, que él sería uno. Algo así como cuando algo está escrito en las estrellas. Y el resto ya es historia, porque Daniel ahora es un gran artista, que ha logrado trabajar no solo con arte sino con moda, arquitectura y diseño, y que ha expuesto sus obras en México, Colombia, Suecia, Finlandia, Dinamarca, Inglaterra, Francia, Italia, Alemania, España y EE. UU.
Daniel es una persona libre: libre de mente, de espíritu, de pensamiento, y que disfruta de la vida en todos sus colores. En otras palabras, un ser despierto que vive una vida sin prisa, con inmenso gozo. Yo creo que para despertar no hay edad; hay quienes muy jóvenes lo hacen, teniendo muy claro sus prioridades y disfrutando consigo mismos cada segundo de libertad que tienen. Hay quienes mueren dormidos, dedicando cada segundo de su vida a alguien más, esclavizados porque así es su gusto o porque no tuvieron otras oportunidades. Daniel, para mí, es uno de esos seres que despertó y por eso es tan especial y único todo lo que hace.
Amo los días donde se siente fácil encontrar belleza en todo. Y por eso he llegado a darme cuenta de que lo bonito tiene que ver con tener fuego en los ojos, entusiasmo por la vida y, sobre todo, un buen sentido del humor. Vivir de una manera justa y respetuosa, con integridad y compasión.
Although Daniel grew up in a family of artists, at first he hated that whole world, but, as in life, things come full circle. His art teacher in school, a tall and grumpy man, told him—after Daniel had learned the names of many artists—that he would become one. Something like when something is written in the stars. And the rest is history, because Daniel is now a great artist, who has managed to work not only in art but also in fashion, architecture, and design, and has exhibited his work in Mexico, Colombia, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the U.S.
Daniel is a free person: free in mind, spirit, and thought, and he enjoys life in all its colors. In other words, a conscious being who lives a life without hurry, with immense joy. I believe that awakening has no age; some do it very young, having their priorities very clear and enjoying every second of freedom with themselves. Others die asleep, dedicating every second of their life to someone else, enslaved because that is their choice or because they had no other opportunities. Daniel, to me, is one of those awakened beings, and that is why everything he does is so special and unique.
I love the days when it feels easy to find beauty in everything. And that is why I have realized that what is beautiful has to do with having fire in your eyes, enthusiasm for life, and, above all, a good sense of humor. To live in a just and respectful way, with integrity and compassion.
Gracias a estos cuentos, los seres humanos aprendimos que lo más importante es cuidar a los que te rodean, y también aprendimos a confiar en nuestros semejantes y a ser amables, a colaborar.
Thanks to these stories, humans have learned that the most important thing is to care for those around you, and we have also learned to trust others, be kind, and collaborate.
